About Artist Mocabel
Carol Belisa “Mocabel” is an artist based from Los Angeles, and native of Honduras. Mocabel fell in love with drawing at a young age and has since pursued her passion for art.
Growing up in Compton in the 90’s, art provided comfort and space to explore and grow in a place and time where violence was the norm.
She graduated from California State University Northridge (CSUN) with a Bachelor of Arts Degree with an emphasis in Fine Arts and Animation.
After graduating, Mocabel participated in a number of community art shows. She was Cofounder of a Southern California Collective Artist Group, im:arte.
She has also collaborated with Cultural Strike on immigrant advocacy work in the Northern California, Bay Area.
Her long time friend and now partner saw her talent and love for the arts. It is her encouragement - that has re-inspired her to return to her natural space of creating art through her lens as a multi-dimensional human being.
Her art explores the intersections of the immigrant experience in the United States, family, LGBTQ+ love and pop culture. Mocabel’s art advocates for change to the norm by promoting how we overcome struggles and show the inherent power in our multicultural communities.
She uses different media forms to bring life to historical and current known figures in a realistic and semi- realistic ie. cartoon, style.
This includes media forms like shoes - check out Bad Bunny and Frida on Vans as an example.
Mocabel also draws inspiration from her father, a master carpenter, in her woodworking art pieces.
Graphic art and her “Culture Kitty” collection draws inspiration from pop culture and allows us to re-imagine iconic figures in colorful and detailed images ie. Dodger Kitty and Frida Kitty.
She currently resides with her partner and plant collection.
Mocabel is open to collaborations with other artists, and for commission work.
